Control Traffic with Stop-Slow Bat & Implement Traffic Management Plans
This course delivers the skills and knowledge that are required to control traffic with a stop-slow bat and to implement traffic management plans in civil construction. It’s suitable for people working in a range of industries where traffic control and management is required.
This course focuses on minimising the risks associated with traffic movement; control traffic to enable drivers to safely negotiate through, past, or around an active worksite. As your consultant, we can help you to meet your training needs.
Course Unit 1
This unit addresses the competency required to control traffic using a stop-slow bat to ensure the safety of construction workers, maintenance workers and the general public. Course content includes:
Preparing to control traffic
- Personal protective equipment required
- Interpreting instructions and planning work
- Applying worksite policies and procedures including environmental protection requirements
- Planning and preparing for accidents and emergencies
- Selecting appropriate tools and equipment to control traffic
Controlling traffic and operating communication devices
- Using devices to communicate and confirm messages
- Directing traffic using a handheld stop-slow bat and hand signals
- Monitoring traffic and adjusting for changing traffic conditions
- Checking and performing maintenance on communication equipment
- Procedure for reporting offending motorists
Conducting housekeeping activities
- Removal or covering of signs as required
- Cleaning, checking and storing tools and equipment
- Procedure for reporting environmental damage
Course Unit 2
This unit addresses the competency required to access, interpret and apply site traffic management plan procedures, to ensure that traffic is controlled safely and ensure the safety of construction, workers, maintenance workers and the general public. Course content includes:
Preparing to implement a traffic management plan
- Determining worksite requirements and the scope of a traffic management plan and traffic guidance scheme
- Identifying, addressing and controlling potential risks, hazards and environmental issues
- Validating suitability of a traffic management plan and traffic guidance scheme and confirming that requirements are met
- Ensuring personnel are adequately resourced and receive instructions to implement a traffic management plan and traffic guidance scheme
Confirming all communication requirements are addressed
Setting out a traffic guidance scheme
- Installing and inspecting required signs and devices according to the traffic guidance scheme
- Inspecting the traffic guidance scheme and authorising work crew to proceed
- Confirming that the work crew are protected from worksite hazards
Monitoring the traffic guidance scheme
- Confirming that traffic flow is being monitored by required personnel
- Applying necessary adjustments to the traffic guidance scheme to maintain the required traffic flow
- Monitoring work activities and applying the required measures to ensure the work crew and road user compliance
- Procedure for reporting offending motorists
Closing down work activities
- Removal or covering of signage, equipment and devices
- Checking, cleaning, maintaining and storing equipment and tools
- Finalising the traffic work zone and closing down the worksite

Certification
This certification includes a combination of theory and practical hands-on activities. Participants who are deemed competent will receive a Statement of Attainment.
